Shopify vs custom eCommerce: which is right for your business
Shopify wins when you want a proven checkout, an app ecosystem, and a merchandising team that can ship without opening a ticket for every banner. Custom commerce wins when your pricing, bundling, or operational graph does not fit a store with apps hanging off the side. Most painful projects are the ones that pretended to be the first while they were secretly the second.
Choose Shopify when the catalog is the product
If you sell variants, run campaigns, and need a theme your marketers can edit, start on Shopify. Theme quality, app restraint, and Core Web Vitals still matter — a slow theme with fifteen apps is not “the Shopify advantage.” WisdomSol’s Shopify work is mostly about making the platform look like your business, not like a demo store.
Shopify Plus is not a strategy by itself. It buys you more checkout and operations headroom. You still need someone to decide what lives in Shopify versus ERP, PIM, or a custom service. Metafields are not an architecture.
Choose custom when the store is a side effect
Complex B2B rules, configurators, multi-warehouse logic that an OMS cannot express, or a product that is actually a SaaS with a cart glued on — those are custom web application problems. You can still use Shopify as a payment and tax engine in some hybrid designs. Do not force a full custom checkout because a developer likes a framework.
The five-year cost
Shopify’s subscription and app fees are visible. Custom’s cost is people and the risk of building a worse checkout than Shopify already has. Count both. If you are unsure, we would rather tell you to stay on Shopify and spend the budget on photography, speed, and fulfillment than sell you a rewrite that makes operations slower.
